Taipei Story vol.02 continues an inquiry into how we inhabit and reinterpret the ordinary fabric of Taipei. The project returns to the Minsheng Community, where a forty-year-old ground-floor residence—passed from mother to child—has accumulated layers of use, memory, and incremental transformation. Rather than a single comprehensive renovation, the house has evolved slowly, shaped by the owner’s hands over many years. Our approach follows this same rhythm: light, precise, and attentive to what already exists.



At the centre of the intervention is the front court, once raised by a 30-centimetre step that marked a firm division between street and home. By removing this threshold, the space is re-graded into a continuous ground plane, opening it toward the neighbourhood and allowing new programs to emerge. What was formerly a stepped entrance becomes a hybrid terrain—a small garden, a garage, and a semi-outdoor workspace.

The owner, an off-road vehicle enthusiast who modifies his own cars, now occupies this space as both mechanic and gardener. Tools, soil, metal, and plants coexist in an ambiguous field where domesticity and craft overlap. Rather than conceal the building’s age, the project sustains its textures: worn concrete, patched surfaces, and the gentle irregularities that testify to decades of living.

Viewed through the eyes of an outsider—a recurring theme of Taipei Story—the familiar house becomes unfamiliar once again. The removal of a single step subtly shifts how the residence meets the city: boundaries soften, routines are re-examined, and the everyday gains new depth. Taipei Story vol.02 suggests that architecture can unfold not through erasure but through careful adjustments that reveal the latent possibilities already present in the ordinary.
