In Taipei Story vol.01, HOUTH embarks on a curious encounter with the city — an encounter borne of the outsider’s gaze, invited inwards. Occupying a more than forty-year-old apartment in Taipei’s Songshan District, this modest studio setting becomes the lens through which the familiar is seen anew, and the everyday is rendered strange again. Within the limited resources and structural constraints of the existing flat, the design team commits to honouring the legacy of the place: original fixtures, worn surfaces, textured walls, vintage tiling — all preserved. Rather than erasing the past, the project embraces the marks of time, allowing that patina to interplay with fresh interventions.

We treat each detail as if it were a foreign sight: the ceiling height, the junction of partition walls, the grain of old timber frames — by observing them with a newcomer’s curiosity, we uncover hidden rhythms and latent atmospheres that we usually glide past. In doing so, we shift our relationship to the city around us: the workbench, the balcony, the corridor — these become small revelations of Taipei’s domestic narrative. The result is both intimate and disarming: you recognise the place, yet something subtle in its ordering or materiality feels off-cadence, as though you have only just arrived.

Taipei Story vol.01 is a meditation on threshold and transformation. It is about how memory and surface, use and misuse, everyday life and architectural time collide. Through careful interventions, HOUTH’s studio becomes more than a workspace—it becomes a mirror to the city we take for granted, revealing Taipei in its simultaneously known and unknown gestures. The familiar becomes unfamiliar — and in that reversal, we find a new way to see ourselves and our surroundings.
